The Australian composer John Antill, best known for his ballet 'Corroboree' which he completed in 1944, returned to an Aboriginal subject in his ballet score for 'Black Opal'. It was performed at the Elizabethan Theatre in Sydney in 1961 by a group known as Ballet Australia. Instead of the elaborate orchestral resources employed in 'Corroboree', 'Black Opal' requires only percussion and a small chorus to accompany the dancers.
