Abram Landa (1902-1989), solicitor and parliamentarian, was born at Belfast, Ireland, son of David and Annie Landa. After her husband's death Annie Landa brought her four children to Australia in, or around, 1910. Abram Landa was educated at Christian Brothers' College, Waverley and the University of Sydney where he graduated Bachelor of Laws in 1927. He was admitted as a solicitor in the same year and from 1934 onward was a partner in his own firm, practising under various partnership names, finally as Abram Landa and Co. Prior to entering parliament Landa was an executive member of the Federated Clerks' Union. Landa was elected ALP member of the NSW Legislative Assembly for the seat of Bondi (1930-1932, 1941-1965) and was appointed Minister for Labour and Industry and for Social Welfare (1953-1956), Minister for Housing (1956-1965) and Minister for Co-operative Societies (1959-1965). Landa was a government nominee on the Senate of the University of Sydney (1943-1966); trustee of the Public Library of NSW (1942-1966) and a member of the Jewish Historical Society from 1949. Landa resigned from parliament in 1965 to accept the position of Agent-General for NSW in London. [ref:Biographical register of the NSW parliament 1901-1970/Radi et al]
