Born in 1905 near Tamworth, Huldah Mary Turner attended Sydney University from 1923-1928 and became a high school teacher, working in schools throughout New South Wales. In 1951 she went to Newcastle Teachers' College as Head of the English Department, later becoming Vice-Principal and acting Principal in 1956. She retired in 1967. Between May and December 1972 she travelled around mainland Australia, making many side trips into the interior, and Tasmania.
