- General note
Charles and Mary Bones built a cottage on this site ca. 1841. The cottage was enlarged by Arthur Dight in 1860 and from 1879 the name `Lansdowne / Lansdown' appears in Sydney directories. Lansdowne was partly demolished and enlarged by Harry Rickards in 1904-1905, the mansion was named `Canonbury'. In 1919 `Canonbury' was sold to the Australian Jockey Club as a home for returned servicemen. In 1953 the Women's Hospital Crown Street leased the building and purchased it in 1959. In 1983 it reverted to the Crown and the building was demolished, the site is now McKell Park. -- Reference: Canonbury : an historical archaeological report / researched and written by Judy Birmingham.
