  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    D. Evans, a Welshman, was also known as "The Felix Man" in Katoomba. His photographic portraits taken at Echo Point may have been seasonal work. Visitors were keen to have their photograph taken with a large Felix doll, a Mickey Mouse lookalike or the "Mountain Devil".
There is no listed entry for D. Evans in directories for commercial premises nor in telephone directories for Katoomba in the late 1920's or 1930's. He lived in Kurrawan Street within walking distance of Echo Point. Since the 1920's this area comprised small cottages with no commercial premises. Perhaps Evans ran his business from home, printing his photographs at night.
Although tintypes were old technology by the 1930's, Evans still produced them as they were inexpensive and quick to process. -- Information supplied by Judy Nelson, Curator, Reclaiming Felix the Cat (exhibition, 2005)
