    William Cowper was born in England in 1778. After being ordained in 1808, Reverend Samuel Marsden offered him the post of assistant chaplain in New South Wales. Cowper arrived in 1809 and became minister to St Philip's Church, Sydney. For the next ten years, Cowper was the only clergyman permanently in Sydney.
