  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    James Hingston Tuckey (1776-1816) was born in County Cork, Ireland. He joined the Royal Navy as a midshipman in 1793. In 1802 he was appointed first lieutenant on HMS Calcutta which went to Port Phillip to found a new colony. Tuckey surveyed Port Phillip and adjacent coasts. After returning to England in 1804 he published 'An Account of a Voyage to Establish a Colony at Port Phillip in Bass's Strait on the South Coast of New South Wales'. Soon afterwards Tuckey was captured by the French and detained in France for ten years. He died in 1816 while exploring the Congo River.

    18 Oct. 1804; Letter from J.H. Tuckey, 'Calcutta', Plymouth, to Lord Melville, advising that he is enclosing the manuscripts of 'A Sketch of the present state of the Colony of New South Wales and The most eligible routes from Port Jackson to various places at different seasons'.
    1804; 'A Sketch of the present state of the Colony of New South Wales, Commercial and Civic, by J.H. Tuckey, 1st Lieut. of HMS Calcutta'. 45 page manuscript written and signed by Tuckey in which he describes various industries including shipbuilding and timber, comments on social conditions, advocates greater trade with India and China and supports the closure of the Norfolk Island settlement.
    1804; 'The most eligible routes from Port Jackson to various places at different seasons'. 8 page manuscript written and signed by Tuckey in which he describes sailing routes from Sydney to India, China, Cape of Good Hope, and to Europe via Cape Horn.
