  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

David Thomas Renouard, aged 16, was a midshipman on HMS Pandora.
  • Scope and Content
1791; transcript by Alfred Purshouse Driver, 7 Sept. 1864, from the original narrative by David Thomas Renouard, 1791
The narrative describes the voyage of the Pandora from Portsmouth on 7 Nov. 1790 to Tahiti in search of the Bounty mutineers, and the subsequent voyage of the tender 'Matavai'. The tender lost contact with the Pandora and, after cruising among the Friendly Islands (Tonga) for some weeks in search of the Pandora, set course for the Dutch East Indies (Indonesia). After an adventurous voyage past the New Hebrides and through Torres Straits, the tender finally reached Surabaya. Here the crew were detained by the Dutch authorities before being sent to Samarang. There they met the remainder of the Pandora's crew and went on with them to Batavia, embarking from there for England in Dutch Indiamen on 25 Dec. 1791. At the Cape of Good Hope Renouard boarded HMS Gorgon and arrived in England in June 1792. The last pages of the manuscript describe Renouard's further service in the Navy from Dec. 1792 to Dec. 1795. The whereabouts of the original narrative is not known.

  • General note

The text of the manuscript was published as: 'The Voyage of the Pandora's Tender' by H.E. Maude in 'Mariner's Mirror', vol. 50 no.3, August 1964, and reprinted as a separate publication in 1964 (Dixson Library location 96/51). Maude suggests that the tender cruised about Fiji rather than Tonga.
