In the late 1950s Professor R. N. Spann of the Department of Government at the University of Sydney led a research project to compile a political chronicle for N.S.W. since Federation. The first monograph published in this venture, co-authored by Spann and Joan Rydon, was New South Wales Politics, 1901-1910 (1962). The project continued until the mid-1970s, collecting material from the Sydney Morning Herald and Hansard onto cards. In 1996 Michael Hogan, Honorary Research Associate in the Department of Government and General Editor of the N.S.W. State Election Series, a N.S.W. Parliament Centenary of Federation Project, published a revised edition of the Spann and Rydon monograph, retitled New South Wales Politics, 1901-1917: An Electoral and Political Chronicle, with contributions from Helen Nelson, drawing upon the labours of departmental staff over several decades. Supplementary resources, being mainly index entries and notes, were also compiled for an unpublished political chronicle from 1918 to 1929
