  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

The New South Corps was raised in 1789. The first contingent arrived in Sydney with the Second Fleet in June 1790. In addition to defending the colony from foreign attack, the Corps' duties included supervising convicts, guarding government buildings and assisting settlers and convicts in emergencies. Officers served as district magistrates, jurors and public servants. The commanding officer held the title of Lieutenant Governor and was expected to take command in the event of the Governor's absence or ill-health. In 1809 the Corps became the 102nd Regiment of Foot. The following year the regiment was withdrawn from New South Wales and replaced by the 73rd Regiment of Foot which arrived with Lachlan Macquarie in April 1810. -- Source: 'A Colonial Regiment: New Sources relating to the New South Wales Corps, 1789-1810', edited by Pamela Statham, 1992 (Mitchell Library location REF 1 Q356.189/1).
Copies of general orders and proclamations were entered into the orderly books of the New South Wales Corps. The Corps' books include many orders not printed in the 1802 publication of 'New South Wales General Standing Orders'. During the period of these books, William Paterson was commanding officer and lieutenant governor, with Joseph Foveaux acting in the positions during Paterson's absence in England from August 1796 to November 1799.
