  • General note

These drawings were the basis of a panorama, painted by Robert Burford, which was displayed in London in 1831 - "The Times" (London) 19 March 1831.

A guide, with an etched frontispiece of the panorama, was published to accompany it: "Description of a view of Hobart Town, Van Dieman's Land, and the surrounding country : now exhibiting at the Panorama, Strand / painted by the proprietor, Mr. R. Burford", London, 1831. The frontispiece suggests that one sheet of the panorama, from the right hand side, is missing as its view is more extensive than the panorama.

  • Date note

No date, but very likely late October-early November 1828. Earle arrived in Hobart from Sydney on 18 October 1828 on HMS Rainbow which then departed for India (with Earle on board) on 11 November 1828 (see The Australian 10 October 1828 p.3; The Tasmanian 24 October 1828 p.2; and Hobart Town Courier, 15 November 1828 p.2). Earle includes a drawing of the Rainbow in the third sheet of the panorama. Date of watermarked paper is 1826.
