Arthur Phillip was appointed first Governor of the colony of New South Wales on 12 October 1786. He was commander of the First Fleet which sailed from Spithead on 31 May 1787 and disembarked at Port Jackson, New South Wales, on 26 January 1788. In December 1792, Phillip returned to England, resigning his post as Governor on 23 July 1793. He died in 1814. - Scope and ContentDocument on parchment, issued by writ of Privy Seal. The commission retains a decorative cord which would have attached the King's seal to the document; the seal is no longer with the document.
