Textual Records - (manuscript) - Scope and Content2 October 1897-19 June 1898; In this two-volume journal W.H Mungall (about whom nothing is known) records the events that occurred during his nine-month tour through South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. Mungall, clearly a person of some education and culture, provides illuminating insights into the life of a late 19th century traveller and displays a fine gift for observation and description. Volume I covers the period 2 October 1897 to 15 February 1898. After spending 3 months in Natal, the Transvaal and Capetown, Mungall arrived in Melbourne in early 1898. From there he visited Launceston and Hobart before sailing for New Zealand. Volume 2 covers the period 16 February to 19 June 1898. He arrived in Sydney on 5 March and visited Manly, Parramatta, Bondi and Milson's Point. He also spent several weeks walking in the Blue Mountains and took a train to Newcastle. After returning to Melbourne he visited Adelaide before embarking for England.
