- Collection historyThe painting, acquired from Mrs Stobo in 1965, formerly belonged to her father-in-law who was a sea captain trading in Australian waters.
- Scope and ContentView from location now called Peacock Point, Balmain. Shows Flagstaff Hill and the Observatory on the left in the middle distance, Fort Street School (the old Military Hospital) on the ridge and the buildings of the Australian Gas Light Company works, operational by 1843, at the water's edge to the right.
