The Rev. David Cargill was appointed to Wesleyan mission at Tonga in 1832, arriving there in 1834. In 1835 he began a new mission in Fiji, first at Lakeba and later in Rewa. He died in 1843. - General note
Two early Fijian books translated and printed by the Rev. David Cargill, 1839, 1840, also donated by Anne Douglas Brown in 1935, are located at Safe 1/1b and Safe 1/1d. - Signatures / Inscriptions
'First key made in Fiji. It was the property of the Rev. David Cargill, M.A., who along with the Rev. R. Cross landed at Lakeba, Fiji, on Oct. 12 1835. Presented to the Mitchell Library, Sydney, by his grand daughter, Anne Douglas Brown, June 1935' -- written on tag attached to key. - Subject
