John Skinner Prout, (1805-1876), artist, was born on 19 December 1805 at Plymouth, England. He arrived with his wife and seven children in Sydney on 14 December, 1840. He brought a complete lithographic printing press with him, and in early 1841 he started producing lithographed versions of his drawings of Sydney. In July of 1841, Prout went on one of four sketching trips, beyond Sydney, which he undertook while living in New South Wales. Travelling to Wollongong from Sydney by steamer, he toured the surrounding countryside, including Mt. Keira, Tom Thumb's Lagoon, and Lake Illawarra, before continuing south down the coast to Broulee, 80 miles south of Sydney. Sources: Skinner Prout in Australia, 1840-48 by Tony Brown. ML Q759.994/53. • General note

This image appeared in "Australia", by Edwin Carton Booth, illustrated with drawings by Skinner Prout, etc. London: Virtue, 1873-1876, vol. II, p. 149. Date of work taken from publisher information of book. ML DSM/Q980.1/46A1 v.1-2. A description of the image is given on p. 150: "Tom Thumb's Lagoon is a small inlet of the sea, and is a thoroughly characteristic bit of Australian scenery. The forests are not so dense now as when the sketch was taken, and the blackfellow, with his lubra and piccaninny, have become things of the past ; but the high, precipitous mount, the gently rising hills, and far-spreading vales remain, and all the old beauty remains with them still".
