  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Daniel Henry Deniehy (1828-1865), lawyer, journalist and parliamentarian, was born at Sydney, son of Henry and Mary Deniehy. He was educated in Sydney until 1843 when he travelled with his parents to Europe where he was further educated privately. Deniehy returned to Sydney in 1844 and finished his schooling before being articled to solicitor N.D. Stenhouse. He was admitted as a solicitor in 1851. Deniehy founded and edited the weekly journal 'The Southern Cross' (1859) and later, while living temporarily in Melbourne, edited 'The Victorian' (1862-1864). He was elected a member of the NSW Legislative Assembly for the seats of Argyle (1857-1859) and East Macquarie (1860).

  • General note

Glass plate is broken and part missing. Coating of black paint on the reverse is defective
Identity of subject uncertain. He looks younger than 24, Deniehy's age at the introduction of the ambrotype process. Only four other portraits of him could be traced, including one hung in the Dixson Gallery, and these show a resemblance to the present photograph -- note on Catalog card
Probably not Deniehy -- Curator of Photographs (Dec 2007)
The group of daguerreotypes and ambrotypes at DL Pa 51 to DL Pa 91, and DL Pb 5, are possibly from the same studio -- note on Catalog card
