  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Lionel Robert Brough (1857-1906), actor-manager, and his actress wife Florence Brough (1858-1932), were contracted by J.C. Williamson. The Broughs' Australian debut was at the Theatre Royal, Melbourne, on 9 May 1885 in Iolanthe. During the Brough's years in Australia, the boast that the colonies could show productions 'equal to anything in London' first showed some justification. Robert Brough collapsed from a heart ailment, and died at Sydney on 20 April 1906. Australian Dictionary of Biography, online edition.
