• ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY
  
  Captain John Piper (1773-1851) arrived in New South Wales in 1792 as an ensign in the New South Wales Corps. He was Commandant at Norfolk Island from 1805-1810 In 1813 he was appointed to the civilian post of Naval Officer, a remunerative position which included the collection of customs duties. After an investigation into his affairs, Piper resigned his post in April 1828 and retired with his family to Alloway Bank near Bathurst.
• Scope and Content
  The papers detail John Pipers whole Australian career and comprise letters to him from many well known officials and settlers on both public and private affairs. Documents include requests for leave of absence and those relating to his appointment of Naval Officer including letters of congratulations and conditions of appointment. Correspondents include Governor Bligh, Alexander Macleay, J.T. Campbell, Joseph Foveaux, Elizabeth and Samuel Marsden Elizabeth and John Macarthur and Sir Maurice O’Connell
