Clarence Earl (Clarry) Chadwick (1909-2004), entomologist, was born at Billinudgel, N.S.W.. He attended Lismore High School and graduated Bachelor of Science from the University of Sydney in 1932. He taught in N.S.W. primary and secondary schools, 1933-1946, and was Lecturer in Botany and Entomology at Broken Hill Technical College, 1941-1944. He was President of the Barrier Field Naturalists’ Club, 1942-1944, and of the Sturt Centenary Celebrations, Broken Hill, 1944. He founded the Illawarra Natural History Society in 1946 and was made an honorary life member in 1959.

Chadwick moved to Sydney in 1947 to take up the appointment of Systematic Entomologist in the N.S.W. Department of Agriculture, a position he held until he retired in May 1974. From 1974-1998 he worked as a volunteer Research Associate at the Australian Museum focusing on cyclad-insect research.

Chadwick was founding President of the Entomological Society of New South Wales, originally known as the Society of Entomologists, Sydney, in 1953, which then became the Entomological Society of Australia (N.S.W.), 1964-1980. He held multiple offices, including President, 1953-1960, 1963-1978; Honorary Editor of General and Applied Entomology, 1964-1977; and was elected Honorary Life Member in 1975. Chadwick joined the Royal Zoological Society of New South Wales as a life member in 1948; he remained inactive in the Society and the Entomology Section until 1979 when he served as Chairman of the latter over the next decade.

In 1988 Chadwick was instrumental in the formation of an independent, autonomous group which led to the creation of the Society for Insect Studies (SIC) in 1989. As a result, The Entomology Section, Royal Zoological Society of New South Wales ceased to function as its members joined the SIC. Chadwick was made a Life Member in 2001 after serving as President, 1989-2000, and in recognition of his lifetime service to entomology. He published scores of articles and his historical researches over a number years culminated in the book Entomology in New South Wales 1770-1990, published by the Society in 1995.
