  • General note

The sketchbook is landscape format, mottled board cover with red spine and corners. `Ulswater’ is inscribed on the spine on both sides. The extant works are by two artists. The first two, `Gold Rill Bridge 1831 and `Place Fell’ are by Glover as is the third, Mount Wellington and the tipped-in `York’ which appears later is actually Durham. The remaining works in frames are copies and were done after Glovers’ arrival in Tasmania. They were done by someone with access to at least four other sketchbooks who understood the copy notation.

There are significantly, further extant material from this book by John Glover (Senior) located elsewhere. Sketches located at DGA 29c 57-59 are originally from the beginning of this sketchbook. Earlier sketches are numbered in pencil LC, 1-24 (highest extant number). Later sketches are copies and are numbered by sketch and sketchbook according to their sources, sketch number/book number, the books used were 41, 44, 57 and 61.

`John McPhee (PXn 527) believes this is possibly a sketchbook done by J. Livesay while a pupil of John or more probably by John Richardson Glover on board the Thomas Laurie en route from England to Australia'.
