  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Rev. James Hay Lawrie and his wife were Presbyterian missionaries from Edinburgh, Scotland to Aneityum, New Hebrides from 1879-1896. Later he was minister of several charges in New South Wales. The donor was the youngest of four children. Mrs Lawrie died in 1922 and Rev. Lawrie in 1929.
The photographs were developed and printed by Lawrie. His photographs of coral reefs were awarded 50 pounds by Kodak (London), because they are the first known to be taken looking from a boat towards the land.
Some of Lawrie's curios are in the "Edinburgh museum" and the "Sydney museum".
