  • Scope and Content
The papers of Major Wingate with the exception of an invitation to Government House, Sydney, all relate to his life before arrival in Australia or to events outside Australia. The Terry papers are mainly letters from Mrs Terry's agents and tenants with a very few draft replies. In many cases the covers only had been preserved.

    The volume comprises 3 parts:

    Part 1. Wingate Papers
Includes correspondence relating to Wingate's commission in the British Army, a test for company officers and sergeants, a list of subscribers to 4 lithographic views of Ghuzai by Wingate, and an invitation from Lady Denison to Government House on Thursday 16 July [1857]

    Part 2. Terry Papers
Mainly business correspondence, some addressed to George Rouse. Correspondents include Edwin Rouse (brother of Eleanor), Richard Hassall, Alfred Kennerley (brother-in-law of Eleanor; later, premier of Tasmania). With miscellaneous papers including a bill of lading, 1803; visiting card of C. F. Engström, British consul; transcription of epitaph on the tomb of Lieuts. Nixon & Hibbert, 2nd Queen's Regiment of Foot (possibly belongs to the Wingate Papers)

    Part 3. Photographs
28 albumen prints, mainly by Major Thomas Wingate, including outdoor views of several properties; some with unidentified groups of people, presumably family and visitors. Thomas Wingate's wife, Eleanor (nee Rouse)'s sister, Jane Rouse married Alfred Kennerley on 18 February 1834. In 1861 Kennerley was elected as an alderman of the Hobart City Council and became mayor in 1862-3 and Premier of Tasmania from 1873-76.
