    Note in blue pencil on back of mount states 'painted on ship's canvas'.

    Also on back of mount in pencil '494'.
  • Signatures / Inscriptions

    Title followed by 'Webber' written in pencil at bottom of mount and note re Cook reference on right hand side. These two notes may be in a former library officer's hand.

    Largest painting has inscription in pencil in lower left hand corner which seems to read '434 (or 424 or 494) J. Webber'. It is similar to a plate in Cook's 2nd Voyage, vol. 2, opposite p. 152, titled 'Man of New Zealand' which is captioned 'Drawn from nature by W. Hodges'.
  • Attributions / conjectures

    Mr Skelton, 28 January, 1958 (ML57/127) states 'the paintings look more like Webber's work than that of Hodges'
