  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

In 1885, John William Lindt joined Sir Peter Scratchley, the first Special Commissioner of British New Guinea, on his expedition to New Guinea as its official photographer. He took many glass plate negatives of tribal life and village scenes and used darkroom facilities aboard the SS Governor Blackall for developing. In 1887, Lindt published a selection of fifty of his photographs in 'Picturesque New Guinea' using the new autotype process. Lindt made seven carbon print enlargements for the specific purpose of display as well as for sale.
