  • Attributions / conjectures

Andrew Tink, in his biography of Townshend, "Lord Sydney: the life and times of Tommy Townshend", 2011, dates this painting to 1754, the year that Townshend entered the House of Commons.
Often attributed to Gilbert Stuart, but this seems unlikely as it shows Townshend as a young man, and therefore must have been made many years before Stuart moved to England in 1775.
  • Date note

Another portrait of Sydney by Stuart is at DG 214, dated ca. 1785, and shows him as an older man.
