John Thomas Baines was born on 27 November 1820 in Norfolk. At the age of 22 he sailed to South Africa where he became a portrait painter and explorer, taking part in three extensive journeys into the interior. After returning to England, in 1852 he published 'Scenery and Events in South Africa'. In March 1855 he left England as official artist to A. C. Gregory’s North Australian expedition to explore the country around the Victoria River in north-west Australia. The Baines River and Mount Baines in Northern Australia were named in his honour. After returning to England Baines was elected a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society for his services to geography. He later returned to Africa, where he remained until his death in Durban on 8 May 1875.
