    Unsigned. A label pasted to the back of the frame, possibly in Spencer's hand, reads '"Orian" Horne. By Summers (Sculptor of the well known Burke and Wills statue in Melbourne).'
  • Attributions / conjectures

    A.H. Spencer acquired the plaque from the sculptor's son and authenticated it as Summer's work. It has also been attributed to Charles Summers by Ken Scarlett (see PXn 362).
  • Date note

    Undated ; Summers left Australia for Rome in 1866.
  • Conservation note

    The plaque when received was broken in several places.
