  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

William Young was the pseudonym used from 1919 until his death in 1944 of the British/Australian artist Paul Sidney Goodwin (1875-1944). Goodwin was born in January 1875 in Southampton, England, the fourth child of William Sidney Goodwin and his wife Elizabeth (nee Young). Moving to London in 1894, he studied at the Croydon School of Art, and in the same year commenced exhibiting with the Royal Hibernian Academy of Arts in Dublin. Goodwin’s artistic endeavours were encouraged by his uncle, Albert Goodwin (1845-1932), a member of the Royal Watercolour Society, with whom he visited Canada in 1890.

A member and regular exhibitor with the Southampton Art Society from the age of fourteen, Goodwin ceased exhibiting with the Society after his father’s death in 1915, and in 1916 he was no longer a council member with the Society, a position he had held since 1911. During World War I he continued exhibiting at the Royal Hibernian Academy of Arts in Dublin, suggesting he may have been residing in Dublin during this period.

Goodwin possibly came to Sydney from Dublin in late 1918, his Australian paintings signed ‘W. Young’ date from 1919. Unmarried and with no children, Goodwin died in Woollahra in September 1944, bequeathing his estate to his friend Sophie Barker, his sisters Carmine and Daisy, and his brother Charles.
