    Keith Harris, a boy of fifteen sailed from Sydney on 27 July 1917 as a member of the crew of S.S. Matunga bound for Newcastle, Brisbane, Rabaul and the Pacific Islands. The vessel was captured by the German Navy raider SMS Wolf on 6 August 1917, the crew were taken on board the SMS Wolf, landed at Kiel, Germany six months later, and were interned at a POW camp at Gustrow, Germany. Harris remained there until he was repatriated to England in December 1918.
  • Scope and Content
    An account of the capture and sinking of the S.S. Matunga on 26 Aug. 1917 by the German raider Wolf, also the sinking of the Japanese ship Hitachi Maru, the American barque John H. Kirby, the French barque Marshal Devout and the Norwegian barque Store Brore. Describes his journey between decks to Keil, Germany 24 Feb. 1918, life in German prisoner of war camps, mutiny amongst the German Navy at Kiel, and his return to London via Denmark and Scotland after the Armistice.
