  • Scope and Content
A 4-page letter from Mr Palsy, a trader in France, to Messieurs Jean Motteux & Cie (possibly of the Huguenot merchant family of that name) in London, containing information about the first voyage of Yves Joseph Tremarec de Kerguelen in 1772 in search of the great south land. The letter reports that the officers had complained about the competence of their commander and includes comments on the relationship between Kerguelen and his second-in-command, Louis de Saint-Allouarn. The letter tells of the abandonment of Saint-Allouarn's vessel, Gros Ventre, by Kerguelen, while it was under attack in thick fog. The letter dates from the period after Kerguelen had returned but before news of Saint-Allouarn's voyage to the coast of western Australiaa had reached France.
