Samuel Murphy, a carter of Camperdown, New South Wales enlisted aged 31, on 17 Aug. 1914 and embarked from Sydney on board Transport A19 Afric, 18 Oct. 1914. He served with the 1st Battalion, Australian Imperial Forces at Gallipoli as Cook Sergeant. He was wounded 8 Aug. 1915 and invalided to Mudros and England where on 19 Nov. 1915 he was transferred to a convalescent hospital. He returned to Australia on the Ascanius, 30 Apr. 1916 - Scope and ContentDescribes voyage from Sydney to Egypt on the S. S. Afric Oct.-Nov. 1914, action at Gallipoli 26 Apr.-16 Aug. 1915 and recuperation in England after being wounded. The diary was lost and events between 24 Apr.-27 May 1915 are described by Robert Irvine, Cook Sergeant of the 9th Battalion. The original writing continues from 29 May 1915.
