  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Penrith Speedway was opened in 1920. It was operated by Western Suburbs Motor Cycle Club and occupied paddocks owned by the local Member of Parliament, Sydney Smith. It closed in October 1930 because of flooding by Penrith's water supply. It was reopened in 1936 by Frank Arthur of Empire Speedways and ran until 1941 when the Army requisitioned the land.

'Alert' had an Alvis radiator, though the rest of it was hotted-up Ford.

Bridget Wynne claimed to be an experienced racing driver (in England) but she never drove in, or even entered to race in this country, so far as is known. Axel Poignant when he was a child is said to have lived with two women at Bondi who ran a garage, and this may have been Bridget and her partner.

The Thomas Special and the Flint both ran at Penrith Speedway at a meeting which was split between 26 December 1927 and 2 Jan. 1928 - New Year's Day was a Sunday, which partly explains these odd dates. Herbert Jenkins was the NSW agent for Frontenac hotting-up parts, and he and his family and drivers used to camp at the Speedway for race meetings. There are hints in the photos that not much racing was going on, so maybe they were taken on practise or off days. Unfortunately, reporting of meetings there in the period 1926 to 1931 was very poor, so other dates, or even the presence of Bridget, can't be ruled out.
