  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Edward George Green, rugby league player, was born in 1883 in the gold mining town of Dalmorton in northern New South Wales, son of Thomas Green and his wife Hannah, nee McMahon. Throughout his career he was known as George Green, and it was widely believed that he was the first rugby league player of Aboriginal descent. However his father Thomas Green referred to himself as a mariner from the island of St Kitts and of African-Carribean descent. Hannah McMahon was Irish, arriving with her family in Australia in 1860.

Green played for Eastern Suburbs, now Sydney Roosters, from 1909 to 1911, then for North Sydney from 1912 to 1916 and again from 1918 to 1922. In 1917 he had one season with Newtown. He continued as a coach and strategist for Norths after his retirement from play. He died at Ryde Hospital in 1938.
