The original plate was left in 1616 on Hartog Island by the Dutch navigator Dirck Hartog who was exploring the coast of West Australia from North-West Cape to Gautheaume Bay.

In 1697 the Dutch skipper Willem de Vlamingh found the plate and made a copy adding an account of his own voyage and re-erected a new plate, taking Hartog's plate back to Holland.

In 1801 the French explorer Captain Hemelin found the Vlamingh plate half buried and re-erected it.

In 1818 the French navigator Freycinet found the plate and took it back to France.

The plate was rediscovered in the national French museum in Paris and presented by the French Government to the Commonwealth Government of Australia in 1948.

In 1950 the Commonwealth Government transferred the original Vlamingh plate to the Perth Art Gallery and presented this copy of the Vlamingh plate to the Mitchell Library.
