    Stylites were Christian ascetics who withdrew to the top of a pillar in order to lead strictly penitential and solitary lives. 'Their earliest and most famous representative was Simeon Stylites (ca. 390 - 459). He was a native of Cilicia and became a hermit near Antioch.. ' [he retired to the platform of a pillar, the height of which he gradually raised to 72ft.]
