Two notes attached to the envelope read: 'Broad-pointed pen kept for Henry Lawson's use. He preferred the broad point especially for his signature F.S.S.' [F.S. Shenstone] and 'The only pen found in the house after Henry Lawson's death. Presented to Mr. Shenstone by Henry's Sister Gertrude O'Connor'
