Frank Johnston was a local historian and conservationist with a particular interest in Palm Beach. In 1984 he founded the Friends of Palm Beach in order to counter Warringah Shire Council's plan to stabilise the sand dunes at Barrenjoey Headland. He was actively involved in many other local conservation issues including the proposed restoration of the Customs House, urban development, beach erosion, and the establishing of a marine park off Broken Bay. He was instrumental in achieving National Park status for Barrenjoey Headland and the official naming of Cabbage Tree Boat Harbour. He died in 1989.
