The donor, a godchild of Charles Grimes' daughter, stated that the portrait, showing an officer of the 50th Regiment, was one of Grimes' sons, killed in action. Arthur Evelyn Fyles' 'The history of the 50th...', London, Chapman and Hill, 1895, states that Lieutenant Joseph John Grimes fell at Aliwal on 30th January 1846 and Lieutenant Charles Robert Grimes at Sobraon on 10th February, 1846. Charles Robert Grimes was appointed ensign in the 50th Regiment on 16th March 1838. This is the first reference to a Grimes in the 50th Regiment in the Army Lists 1800-1839.
