    Information from Field Librarian's notes, Mitchell Library administrative file, 1972:

    Edward Denham was Air Vice-Marshall W. N. Gibson's wife's grandfather. John Melliday was Denham's business partner. The firm ultimately became Denham Bros in Sussex St and they were produce merchants. They became defunct in 1940 and were taken over by PDS.

    J. A. Stanley Adam came out from England some time before 1890 and lived on the North Shore. He was a friend and business associate of Edward Denham.

    6 Gower St Summer Hill was W. N. Gibson's wife's mother's old home. Melliday lived next door at 8 Gower St.

    Information from Field Librarian's notes, Mitchell Library administrative file, 1972: The plans and specifications for stables at 6 Gower Street were a gift to the Mitchell Library (the rest of the collection was purchased by the Library). When the building was erected there were some changes made. The letterbook belonged to John Melliday, business partner of Edward Denham. The photo-album belonged to John S. Adam.

    Includes one press-copy account book (invoices for groceries etc.) 1880s; 2 legal agreements between John Melliday & Co. and the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co. Limited, 1887, and Goldsbrough and Company Limited, 1888; 2 Denham Bros. market quotes (printed); statement of legal fees?, Messrs Dawson & Son to Wilkins Blyth Dutton & Hartley, re Winder, 1893; newscuttings; plans and specifications for stable at 6 Gower Street, Summer Hill, 1894.

    Includes pictorial material transferred from Pic.Acc.2559:
    1 mounted photograph of the Sugar Mill, Canterbury. Inscribed in pencil on verso: "Old Sugar Mill at Canterbury - bought by E D & turned into bacon factory - Subsequently sold to J. C. Huttons"
    1 mounted photograph of homestead, titled "Carinya" below photograph; two small children on lawn.
