  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Jane Bennett is a Sydney artist whose work focuses on the industrial side of Sydney, especially the Harbour foreshore and islands. She documents the disappearance or transformation of much of Sydney's industrial landscape.

She has won over 80 prizes including the 1990, 1995 and 1996 Pring Prize. She has also been a finalist in the 1986, 1997 and 2008 Sulman Prize; 5 times finalist in the Wynne Prize (winning the 1995 Trustees prize for watercolour) and 6 times finalist in the Dobell Prize.

The artist had access to the western pylon of the ANZAC Bridge during it's construction.

  • General note

The work was painted from the same perspective as Closing the Gap, 1995 (ML 1418), another work by the artist. Where Closing the Gap shows the view east across Pyrmont towards the city, this work shows the view west across Balmain from the same vantage point.
