  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Ebenezer Vickery was a merchant, manufacturer and philanthropist, born in 1827 in London, who migrated to Australia in 1933. He achieved much financial success through his business dealings which included coal mining, shipping, finance and transport.

His estate Edina was built ca. 1884, on a site that he had lived on since 1864. It was a two storey mansion featuring orated ceilings, cedar doors and staircases, cast iron balustrades, etched glass door panels and stained glass windows. Much of the house was decorated with fittings and materials Vickery sourced from Italy including tiling that came from the ancient site of Pompeii.

Upon the death of Vickery's son, Ebenezer Jnr. who inherited the estate, the property was donated to the Methodist Church and it became the War Memorial Hospital.
