  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Melbourne-born Neville David Quarry (1933-2004), architect and academic, graduated from the University of Melbourne (Bachelor of Architecture, 1956) and Rice University, Texas (Master of Architecture, 1961). He was senior lecturer in the School of Architecture and Building at Melbourne University, 1961-1970, where he also edited Cross-Section, a monthly critical journal offering incisive and humorous appraisals of buildings, projects and environmental issues. In 1971 he set up the inaugural School of Architecture at the Papua New Guinea University of Technology at Lae developing courses sympathetic to the needs of a developing country, and, in recognition of his services, was awarded the Papua New Guinea Independence Medal in 1975. Quarry served as Professor of Architecture in the Faculty of Design, Architecture and Building, University of Technology Sydney, 1976-1996. In 1994 he received the Royal Australian Institute of Architects Gold Medal in recognition of his ‘most valuable contributions to architectural education nationally and internationally, and to the understanding and appreciation of architecture both within the profession and by the general community.’ In 1981 he had been awarded the Jean Tschumi Prize by the International Union of Architects for the training of young architects and fostering professional international collaboration. In the last decade of his life Neville Quarry undertook a research project, ‘The Architecture of the Annunciation’, a study focusing on the scenography in Italian Renaissance paintings, which remained unfinished at the time of his death.
