  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Commander Harry Thring Bennett DSO, RN, was born in 1888. Between 1923 and 1929, while on loan from the Royal Navy, he was in command of HMAS Geranium during a survey of the Great Barrier Reef. He died in 1968.
    HMAS Geranium was an Arabis class sloop which was operated by the Royal Navy as a minesweeper from 1915 until 1919, when she was transferred to the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) for use as a survey ship.
  • Scope and Content
    Photographs include HMAS Geranium, Commander Bennett and crew members, surveying scenes, Aboriginal people, obelisk erected in memory of Matthew Flinders in the Sir Edward Pellew Group of islands.
