  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    George Roberts, a watercolour and scene-painter, was born in Tunbridge Wells, England. He arrived with his family in Sydney in about 1840 and worked as a theatrical scene-painter and carpenter. Roberts also painted watercolour views including architectural subjects and street scenes in Sydney and it environs, particularly the eastern suburbs. Roberts died in May 1865.

    Gordon's Post Mill was run by the Gordon family and used to grind wheat from the early 1830s. It was located at the end of Gordon Street, Paddington. It was a wooden mill, revolving on a stone base, with the owner's house and miller's cottage located nearby.

    Inscribed in pencil on sheet attached to backing board of watercolour:
    'Note this mill stood just south of the junction of Gordon & Stewart Streets Paddington and opposite the end of Elizabeth St.
    The House to the left was the Millers house and Mr Luker of Luker & R...in? lived there.
    The cottage to the right is still standing with its front out and iron over the shingles as a play shed in the Grounds of the Paddington Public School.
    Note Gordon St. is between this cottage and the Mill site. 1891. NS.?'
