The photographs were originally owned by the now defunct Australian Publicity Council, and "were rescued when the Council's office was being cleared". They were given to the State Library of Victoria in 1985, who sent photographs of non-Victorian subjects to other states, the New South Wales photographs being offered to the Mitchell Library in April 1988 -- Source: ML correspondence file An unrelated group of 5 postcards and one snapshot received from the State Library of Victoria in February 1988 was accessioned together with this collection.

622 b&w photoprints by Australian Publicity Council, Victorian Division, and other photographers and government agencies.

Photographers include Max Dupain, Douglass Baglin, W. Pedersen for Australian News and Information Bureau, A. & H. Gibbs, Wolfgang Sievers for Conzinc Riotinto of Australia Ltd, J. Fitzpatrick, Sutcliffe Pty. Ltd., F. C. Johnson, W. Brindle, Glenn A. Keep, Eric W. Bierre, John Carnemolla, Gervaise Purcell, J. Tanner, Jack Band, Geoffrey Lee, Arthur Cratchley, Phil Ward, Ray Leighton, and others.

Most photographs are captioned on verso. Broad subject arrangement by cataloguer.
