Louis Auguste de Sainson, a watercolourist and draughtsman, was born in Paris in 1800. He began his naval career in 1825, volunteering to join the expedition of the ‘Astrolabe’ as a draughtsman in 1826. The expedition, under the command of Dumont d'Urville, visited King George Sound on the south coast of West Australia in October 1826 finding a safe anchorage, water supply and firewood .

The ‘Astrolabe’ returned to France in April 1829. From June 1829 to December 1834 de Sainson was a member of the editorial team preparing the official account of the expedition for publication.
