George Gittoes is a painter, draughtsman, printmaker, film maker and performance artist. He was one of the artists involved in Sydney's Yellow House before creating a creative hub at Bundeena, south of Sydney.

These slides of BHP's Newcastle and Port Kembla steelworks were taken by George Gittoes while he was artist-in-residence at Wollongong City and Newcastle Region art galleries in 1989. The series, called 'Heavy Industry', is based on observations of working life at blast furnaces, mines and other heavy industry sites. It exposes the external and internal realities of those who work in harsh conditions in the heavy industry workplace.
