  • Scope and Content
    Each card is titled Australian Retrospect and depicts early settlement in Sydney and Melbourne.

    1. First Englishman to land in Australia. Captain William Dampier at Shark's Bay, on his 1699 second visit.

    2. East coast discovered. At 6 a.m. April 19, 1770, Mr Hicks, Captain cook's first lieutenant, sights Gippsland beaches and 'Cape Hicks".

    3. Port Phillip Bay 1803. Lt. Colonel Collins & Captain Woodriff spend days in H.M.S. 'Calcutta's' boats, visiting Arthur's Seat, Indented Head, and Swan Island, then start a settlement at Sorrento.

    4. 1835. Parramatta-born John Batman sails from Tasmania to Port Phillip. On Yarra River he picks site of Melbourne as 'place for a village'.

    5. 1837. Yarra Yarra Wurundjeri tribesmen find white people settling in river valleys near Eltham, and with such startling possessions as cattle, horses, and sheep.

    6. 1869. In famous era of the clipper ships, when Sydney Harbour was known as 'Port of Happy Return'.

    7. Our first troops. Men of the New South Wales Regiment, ('Rum' Corps') sing Christmas Carols in George Street, Sydney.
