  • General note

The oil and pastel portraits were seen by the Mitchell Librarian at Miss Cape's home in January 1975, and Miss Cape agreed to their being photographed by the Library. They were said also to have been seen and documented by the researcher Eve Buscombe, who thought that the pastel portraits were by Dalton. The oil portrait of John Redmond Barnes Scarvell is now held by the Mitchell Library (ML 1194).

The photographs of prospecting in Western Australia were printed from glass plate negatives taken by Miss Cape's uncle, William Lang, about 1900; the plates were lent to the Library for copying in November 1975.

The physical description of the original framed photograph of W. F. Cape is taken from a note made when the item was copied (note discarded). It stated that W. F. Cape was the first chairman of the Sydney Stock Exchange 1872-1874 and the grandfather of J. H. and E. M. Cape of Rose Bay.

Miss Cape was a keen photographer, who got her first camera in 1915, when the Cape family photograph album begins (MAV / FM4 / 6461). Most photographs in the album are clearly labelled and dated. Miss Cape's father was a keen aviation fan and the photographs include outings to see aeronautical events. The album was lent to the Library for copying in March 1976. Microfilm of other family documents lent by Miss Cape for copying in November 1975 is held at MAV / FM4 / 6462.
